City of Manchester Stadium - Manchester

Main Contractor - Laing O'Rouke

Main Architect - Arup Associates

Project Summary
The City of Manchester Stadium represented a landmark project for Speedwell and presented its own unique challenges. The stadium was built to hold the 2002 Commonwealth Games and later became the home of Manchester City Football Club. The stadium was designed to make a statement and forms the centre piece of the Sportcity complex, with the innovative roof design becoming a forerunner for arenas and stadiums constructed since.

The liner panel acts structually to support the standing seam acoustic roofing as well as creating a hidden zone for acoustic insultion, cable wiring and roof bracing. It also forms a visually clean ceiling to the underside of the
roof, eliminating the need for a separate ceiling.

In 2002 the project was awarded the British Construction Industries Major Project Award' and the City Life Awards 'Building of the Year'.
